La projection de L’Horrible Docteur Orlof (Espagne - France, 1961, NB, VF) le jeudi 13 décembre à 20h30 s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un hommage à Jess Franco qui se poursuivra le jeudi 17 janvier avec Vampyros Lesbos (Las Vampiras/ Die Erbin des Dracula / Sexualité spéciale) (Espagne-Allemagne de l’Ouest, 1970, couleurs, VO allemande), une variation très personnelle, érotique et expérimentale sur Dracula tournée à Istanbul.

Assistant d’ Orson Welles sur Falstaff et Don Quichotte (dont il assurera le montage de 1992), réalisateur aux 80 pseudonymes et champion incontesté des tournages simultanés à très faibles coûts, Jesús Franco Manera a occupé à peu près tous les postes techniques et artistiques durant sa diluvienne carrière. Sa filmographie, comportant plus de 180 longs - métrages, est d’autant plus démentielle qu’elle s’est élaborée en marge du système, loin des studios.

Trop de liberté, trop d’excès et une négligence certaine (revendiquée ou induite par des conditions de production qui redonnent tout son sens à la notion de sacerdoce)… Franco continue à diviser, entre exégètes forcenés à la recherche du moindre montage alternatif et une vaste majorité de spectateurs rebutés tant par sa conception très lâche de la narration que les aspérités Z de ses expériences fofolles.

L’Horrible Docteur Orlof et Vampyros Lesbos font partie de ses œuvres les plus novatrices et réfléchies.

Dans l’esprit des nombreuses séances Bis que La Cinémathèque Française lui a consacré et avant l’hommage que la vénérable institution s’apprête à lui rendre en juillet 2008 : « Jess Franco, fragments d’une filmographie impossible », Cannibale Peluche ne pouvait que célébrer son univers singulier, creuset fantasmatique de névroses, de pulsions, de visions poétiques et (parfois) de rires.
